Ascent of the Thunder Dragon is Sasha Wakefield’s debut book where she weaves the extraordinary life of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal—the 17th-century founder of Bhutan and a larger-than-life spiritual figure—through the intimate lens of her own spiritual journey. From the sun-kissed beaches of Australia to the misty mountains of Bhutan, she follows the path that led her from childhood questioning to a life-changing encounter with her teacher.

Moving between the 17th and 21st centuries, this unique blend of biography and memoir offers a compelling portrait of a nation shaped by one man’s compassionate vision. Wakefield explores Zhabdrung’s remarkable life and spiritual accomplishments within the context of her own journey, illuminating key Buddhist concepts such as reincarnation, karma, bodhisattvas, buddhas, and enlightenment. She highlights Zhabdrung’s attainment of the tenth bhumi—the highest level of a bodhisattva—and his conscious choice to direct his own rebirth.

She also reveals how Zhabdrung secured Bhutan’s lasting sovereignty by establishing the Drukpa Kargyu lineage as the predominant religion and forging a distinct national identity grounded in unique cultural and spiritual traditions.

This is a story of destiny, compassion, wisdom, and devotion—offering a glimpse into timeless truths for spiritual seekers everywhere.
